Yellowstone and the Tetons in Winter, February 2025

In February 2025 I am going to guide a small group of photographers, limited to only 6 as my maximum, to explore and photograph the winter wildlife and landscapes of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, which includes Jackson, Wyoming, Grand Teton National Park and surrounding areas and Yellowstone National Park.

8 Days, 7 nights

The Schedule

Day 1

Arrive to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Meet and Greet and private transfer on arrival. This evening we will have a welcome dinner and orientation.

Overnight Huff House Inn

Day 2

Depart early today for a morning of photography in Grand Teton National Park. We will take in the winter scenery of the snow-covered valley and the high mountain peaks of the Teton Mountain Rang. We are looking for wolves, moose, coyotes, eagles, big horn sheep and dramatic landscapes. Where there are beautiful things to photograph we will be there. We will have lunch at The National Museum of Wildlife Art to warm up and take a little break, as well as to see its impressive collection of wildlife art. The museum’s permanent collection of over 5,000 catalogued items includes paintings, sculpture and works on paper by over 100 distinguished artists, ranging from early American tribes though contemporary masters. In the afternoon we will spend time in the National Elk Refuge, to view up close the vast herd of thousands of elk that winter on the refuge.

Overnight at Huff House Inn

Day 3

We will spend the morning exploring the northern reaches of Grand Teton, taking in impressive landscapes that include Oxbow Bend and the shores of Jackson Lake. This afternoon we will depart for Yellowstone National Park’s interior by snow coach, which is the only way to enter Yellowstone in the winter. The winter season is only open for a brief time, which makes visiting at this time of the year very special. In winter, Yellowstone roads are only accessible by over-snow vehicles, so you will witness the park’s serene beauty without any crowds. Arrive at Old Faithful, check in at the lodge and explore the geyser basin. Bison and other wildlife frequent the area to enjoy the warmth of the thermal features. We are staying for two nights at Old Faithful Snow Lodge, a truly unique way to experience Yellowstone.

Overnight at Old Faithful Snow Lodge

Day 4

Explore Yellowstone by private snow coach today. Journey into the Madison Valley in search of Yellowstone’s abundant wildlife in their winter habitat. Many species of birds and mammals winter along the Madison River corridor, which is where we will spend some of our time. We will continue to Fountain Paint Pots to explore the area’s geyser basin.

Overnight at Old Faithful Snow Lodge

Day 5

Let’s get out and explore the Upper Geyser Basin on foot, taking advantage of the steam that rises and fills the air with great scenes, which are perfect for photography. We will depart for another day of private snow coaching en route to Mammoth Hot Springs. We will travel along the Firehole and Gallatin Rivers, taking in the scenic winter landscapes and wildlife of Yellowstone along the way.

Overnight at Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel

Day 6

This morning we will get out early, in search of the grey wolf. Reintroduced to the greater Yellowstone ecosystem in 1995, the grey wolf has become one of the stars of the Northern Yellowstone Range. Spend the morning in the Lamar Valley, in hopes of viewing these beautiful animals. Head back to our hotel in the late afternoon and early evening. Tonight is a ‘free’ evening if you would like to take time on your own to catch up on emails or relax on your own, as we will have better communications from this point forward on the trip.

Overnight at Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel

Day 7

Enjoy a final morning in Yellowstone, with one last chance for wildlife viewing. After lunch in the Old West town of Gardiner, Montana, Yellowstone’s northern gateway, make your way through Paradise Valley. Surrounded by the Gallatin and Absaroka mountains and winter range for many species, the Paradise Valley provides excellent scenery and photographic opportunities. Arrive late afternoon at your centrally located accommodations in historic downtown Bozeman. We will have a farewell dinner tonight.

Overnight at Armory Hotel

Day 8

At any time today you can fly back home and we will handle the transfer for you from the hotel to the airport

Please note: We will attempt to adhere to this itinerary as much as possible. However, certain conditions (political, climatic, environmental, cultural, or wildlife migrations) may necessitate changes in the itinerary. We reserves the right to alter any itinerary at any time, if necessary. We will attempt to notify participants of changes as far in advance as possible. Costs incurred by such changes will be the responsibility of the participant.
